What is a Folio Number in Mutual Fund?

A Folio Number Meaning

A folio number is a unique number allotted to investors to identify holdings with the respective mutual fund. The unique number differs from fund house to fund house. Only an existing investor is supposed to have a folio number, not the new ones. While filling the form, a new investor should ignore the column of folio number because he will be allotted one only after making the investment. An investor can make multiple purchases by using the same folio number within the same Mutual Fund.

In simpler terms, Folio number can be understood as similar to a bank account number, which is allocated to every customer on opening a bank account. Every account number is unique and belongs to a single bank. Similar to the account number, folio number is unique to one fund house. An investor can invest in different schemes using one folio number within a fund house.

Need of Folio Number

The increase in online transactions necessitates the need for digital tracking options so that the account of each investor can be maintained effectively and efficiently. It helps the Fund House to pull the investments of each and every investor, the invested amount, the purchased units and similar other things in just one click.

Where to Find the Folio Number?

  1. Consolidated Account Statements (CAS)

It is a statement that reflects the money holding in a scheme. It is similar to a bank passbook.

A Consolidated account statement will reflect the following:

    1. The scheme in which you have invested.
    2. The amount you’ve invested, the purchase price and the units you were allotted.
    3. Other details like Folio number, Bank details, mailing, and contact details, nominee details, etc.

The industry issues a consolidated account statement and valuation of all mutual fund investments across different fund houses under a particular PAN once a month. However, additional statements can be requested with each fund house that will solely reflect the holdings in the schemes managed by that particular fund house, although there are charges levied for requesting an account statement.

These Consolidated Account Statements contain every single detail about the mutual fund scheme, and it also has the folio number mentioned.

This is probably the simplest way to know your Folio number.

  2. Mutual Fund Statements

Folio Number can also be obtained from the MF statements which are periodically mailed to the investors. Generally, the number is mentioned at the top of those statements. You can find your folio number by login online on your Mutual Fund website with your login id and password.
