Who is Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)?

A foreign national or citizen except Pakistan and Bangladesh will be an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), if

  • He/she was an Indian citizen or was eligible to get Indian citizenship on or after 26 Jan 1950.
  • He/she belongs to a territory that became part of India after India got freedom on 15 Aug 1947.

In addition, minor children of OCI parents are entitled to get OCI cards. Further, grandchild or great-grandchild are also eligible to become OCI. And, the spouse of OCI cardholder can become OCI.
