What is Rights Issue of Shares?

Rights issue or rights offering is a right offered to the existing shareholders to buy more shares of the company at a discounted price. Rights shares are offered proportionally to the current holdings of an investor, say 2:1, which means 2 rights shares are offered for every 1 share owned by the shareholder.
