PIS or Portfolio Investment Scheme is an RBI mechanism that allows NRIs to invest in the Indian stock market and bonds. NRIs can invest in India on a repatriation basis using an NRE account or a non-repatriation basis with an NRO bank account.
- NRE PIS Account: If an NRI opens an NRE account to purchase shares of Indian companies, it is mandatory to seek RBI PIS approval. Thus, NRI can use the NRE PIS Account to purchase and sell shares on BSE and NSE. Know more
- NRO Non-PIS account: RBI also allows non-residents to invest in the Indian market using the NRO Account. As an NRI, if you open an NRO bank account and use deposits to purchase and sell an Indian company's shares, you don’t have to obtain PIS permission from RBI. Know more
